Thursday, December 7

8:00 a.m.   Welcome and Introductions

8:15 a.m.   Opening Address: Data is Everywhere, All at Once

  • David R. Brousell, Founder, Vice President and Executive Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council

The great promise of Manufacturing 4.0 has been that, as manufacturing companies increasingly connect more physical objects and people, they would be able to gain important operational and business insights from the data generated from those connections. But as data volumes grow, are manufacturers well organized around the opportunity?

8:30 a.m.   Keynote: Capturing Intelligence for Business Model Innovation

  • Bob Parker, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Research, IDC

According to the IDC Global DataSphere, the amount of data generated is growing at over 27% per year, reaching 106 exabytes in 2022 (an exabyte is one billion gigabytes).  In the manufacturing industry, unlocking the value in this data has been at the heart of digital transformation efforts and the source of competitive advantage.  In this presentation, Bob will draw from IDC’s research on digital maturity and the future of enterprise intelligence to show how manufacturing firms are enabling new business models through enhanced customer experience and new operating models through capturing the economies of intelligence.

Section 1 – Data Value

9:00 a.m.   Fireside Chat: Data Value Realization

One of the biggest challenges with Manufacturing 4.0 is the realization of value on projects. The traditional measures of ROI work for optimization and modernization initiatives but are often more challenging to realize for true transformation projects. On this panel, we will discuss alternate ways to think about value and the importance of properly defining and aligning what is meant by value. While the end goal is still financial return, the actual metrics and measures of transformation success are often non-financial.

  • Anthony Huffman, Enterprise Architecture Strategist, Industry 4.0, Koch Industries
  • Jeff Winter, Senior Director of Industry Strategy, Hitachi Solutions

In conversation with: Steven Moskowitz, Ph.D., Senior Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council

9:30 a.m.   The Rise of Data Ecosystems

  • John Dyck, Chief Executive Officer, CESMII, The Smart Manufacturing Institute

Data sharing initiatives are cropping up around the world and taking both horizontal and vertical industry forms such as in pharma and in automotive. Most prominent are the Manufacturing-X, Gaia-X, and Catena-X initiatives. The underlying trend that is driving their formation is the need for companies and their supplier and partners to share and use data in a way that benefits all. This session will explain what these ecosystems are, their goals, and the challenges they face in establishing trust among partners as well governance and technical issues inherent with data sharing.

10:00 a.m.   Panel Discussion: Perspectives on Data Ecosystems

This follow-up to the Rise of Data Ecosystems session will bring together key observers of the ecosystem trend from industry who will share their thoughts about the viability of emerging ecosystems and how important they will be for manufacturers to participate in in the future and what it will take to be successful to do so.

  • John Dyck, Chief Executive Officer, CESMII, The Smart Manufacturing Institute
  • Siva Gurupackiam, Senior Vice President of Industry Solutions, Manufacturing, NTT DATA
  • Andrea Kates, Innovation Advisor and Co-Founder, Suma Ventures

Moderator: David R. Brousell, Founder, Vice President and Executive Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council

10:30 a.m.   30-Minute Break in Content

11:00 a.m.   Building Great Supply Chain Visibility by 2030

  • Lora Cecere, Founder, Supply Chain Insights

As a result of the recent pandemic, manufacturers are placing a greater emphasis on supply chain resiliency in order to be prepared for future disruptions. A critical component in building resiliency is the effective use of supply chain data, but today 80% of the data being generated about supply chains isn’t being used well enough to identify insights that could advance resiliency. This session will explore how data can be used more effectively to create truly resilient supply chains by 2030.

11:30 a.m.   Interactive Review: Data and Value

  • Steven Moskowitz, D., Senior Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council
  • Andrea Kates, Innovation Advisor and Co-Founder, Suma Ventures
Section 2 – People and Process

11:45 a.m.   Panel Discussion: Preparing for Emerging Job Roles

With the rapid growth of AI-driven solutions, there is already the introduction of new job roles that didn’t exist even one year ago – positions like Prompt Engineer and Data/AI Ethicist. So how can companies prepare for whatever comes next around training, recruiting, and organizational flexibility?

  • Rosana Cerna, Senior Director of People, ALOM
  • Lizabeth Stuck, Vice President of MxD Learn, MxD
  • Pooja Tripathi, Director, Workforce Initiatives, The Manufacturing Institute

Moderator: Penelope Brown, Senior Content Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council

12:15 p.m.   Defining Data-Driven Leadership

  • Peter Aiken, Ph.D., President, DAMA International; Associate Professor of Information Systems, Virginia Commonwealth University, Associate Director, MIT International Society of Chief Data Officers

What are the key skills, behaviors, and roles manufacturing leaders will need by 2030 as their companies become increasingly digitized and data-driven? This session will explore how manufacturers will need to shape their executive ranks and reporting structures to fully exploit the opportunity of a data-driven enterprise.

12:45 p.m.   Break for Lunch

1:45 p.m.   Panel Discussion: Creating a Data-Driven Culture

Today we talk about data-driven decision making and data-driven culture. What does the future look like when AI systems and chatbots and factory robots are integrated into the organization? What does it look like when data and AI are as important as the people on our teams? Does AI have a place in the diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace?

  • Bryan Bauw, Chief Operating Officer, Pico MES

Section 3 – Technology and Data

2:30 p.m.   Panel Discussion: AI’s Role in Driving Value

There is a tremendous focus today on large language AI models such as ChatGPT and the potential they have to change the way we work. How will AI help improve the way humans work by enhancing and augmenting our abilities as individuals and as groups – all while driving more opportunities for people rather than replacing them?

  • Steve Dertien, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, PTC

We live in a three-dimensional world but for many manufacturers work is still getting done utilizing 2D models, flat drawings, Excel spreadsheets and paper-based information and instructions.  But the Digital Thread offers the opportunity to leverage contextualized 3D information to improve decision making, manage complexity, boost productivity, drive higher quality, maximize customer value, and move ahead of the competition. Learn how the Digital Thread, Augmented Reality and the Industrial Metaverse can improve how 3D data is accessed, viewed and leveraged throughout the product lifecycle today, what may be possible in the future, and how to get yourself ready.

3:30 p.m.   15-Minute Break in Content
