The great promise of Manufacturing 4.0 has been that, as manufacturing companies increasingly connect more physical objects and people, they would be able to gain important operational and business insights from the data generated from those connections. But as data volumes grow, are manufacturers well organized around the opportunity?
According to the IDC Global DataSphere, the amount of data generated is growing at over 27% per year, reaching 106 exabytes in 2022 (an exabyte is one billion gigabytes). In the manufacturing industry, unlocking the value in this data has been at the heart of digital transformation efforts and the source of competitive advantage. In this presentation, Bob will draw from IDC’s research on digital maturity and the future of enterprise intelligence to show how manufacturing firms are enabling new business models through enhanced customer experience and new operating models through capturing the economies of intelligence.
One of the biggest challenges with Manufacturing 4.0 is the realization of value on projects. The traditional measures of ROI work for optimization and modernization initiatives but are often more challenging to realize for true transformation projects. On this panel, we will discuss alternate ways to think about value and the importance of properly defining and aligning what is meant by value. While the end goal is still financial return, the actual metrics and measures of transformation success are often non-financial.

Data sharing initiatives are cropping up around the world and taking both horizontal and vertical industry forms such as in pharma and in automotive. Most prominent are the Manufacturing-X, Gaia-X, and Catena-X initiatives. The underlying trend that is driving their formation is the need for companies and their supplier and partners to share and use data in a way that benefits all. This session will explain what these ecosystems are, their goals, and the challenges they face in establishing trust among partners as well governance and technical issues inherent with data sharing.
This follow-up to the Rise of Data Ecosystems session will bring together key observers of the ecosystem trend from industry who will share their thoughts about the viability of emerging ecosystems and how important they will be for manufacturers to participate in in the future and what it will take to be successful to do so.

As a result of the recent pandemic, manufacturers are placing a greater emphasis on supply chain resiliency in order to be prepared for future disruptions. A critical component in building resiliency is the effective use of supply chain data, but today 80% of the data being generated about supply chains isn’t being used well enough to identify insights that could advance resiliency. This session will explore how data can be used more effectively to create truly resilient supply chains by 2030.
With the rapid growth of AI-driven solutions, there is already the introduction of new job roles that didn’t exist even one year ago – positions like Prompt Engineer and Data/AI Ethicist. So how can companies prepare for whatever comes next around training, recruiting, and organizational flexibility?
Moderator: Penelope Brown, Senior Content Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council
What are the key skills, behaviors, and roles manufacturing leaders will need by 2030 as their companies become increasingly digitized and data-driven? This session will explore how manufacturers will need to shape their executive ranks and reporting structures to fully exploit the opportunity of a data-driven enterprise.
Today we talk about data-driven decision making and data-driven culture. What does the future look like when AI systems and chatbots and factory robots are integrated into the organization? What does it look like when data and AI are as important as the people on our teams? Does AI have a place in the diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace?
Moderator: Penelope Brown, Senior Content Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council
There is a tremendous focus today on large language AI models such as ChatGPT and the potential they have to change the way we work. How will AI help improve the way humans work by enhancing and augmenting our abilities as individuals and as groups – all while driving more opportunities for people rather than replacing them?
Moderator: Jeff Puma, Content Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council
We live in a three-dimensional world but for many manufacturers work is still getting done utilizing 2D models, flat drawings, Excel spreadsheets and paper-based information and instructions. But the Digital Thread offers the opportunity to leverage contextualized 3D information to improve decision making, manage complexity, boost productivity, drive higher quality, maximize customer value, and move ahead of the competition. Learn how the Digital Thread, Augmented Reality and the Industrial Metaverse can improve how 3D data is accessed, viewed and leveraged throughout the product lifecycle today, what may be possible in the future, and how to get yourself ready.
Similar to AI-driven LLM, the Industrial Metaverse is also moving through the hype cycle. Where will we be in 2030? Will the Industrial Metaverse integrate with traditional lean thinking and bring Metaverse-enabled gemba walks and kaizens to shrink the distances between teams?
Moderator: David R. Brousell, Founder, Vice President and Executive Director, Manufacturing Leadership Council
The future should be scary, but not overwhelming. At the same time, it needs to push our thinking beyond our current comfort zone. The future we describe should provide excitement and direction for everyone, not limited only to large, multinational enterprises.
Based on what we have heard, we will discuss two topics:

Content Director
Since 2022, Jeff Puma has served as Content Director for the Manufacturing Leadership Council. Prior to this role, he led marketing and communications for the Association for Manufacturing Excellence where he helped AME navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and increase its profile as a lean, continuous improvement thought leader on social media and in the virtual space.
He previously served as Account Director at Lipman Hearne, an agency serving associations, universities, and non-profits. He oversaw branding, advertising, marketing, fundraising and other work for clients including Obama Foundation, University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football, University of the Pacific, Sweet Briar College, and Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. His career also includes time in the education space leading communications and marketing for both public and private schools in Chicagoland.
Jeff began his career with Siemens USA. He created Siemens’ first executive outreach program, working with six C-level executives to establish them as thought leaders on industry, infrastructure, and technology. Prior to launching this ambitious program, he worked in the company’s Washington, D.C., office for Siemens Transportation Systems, Inc., before heading that operating company’s marketing and communication office in Sacramento, Calif. While with Siemens TS, Jeff graduated from Siemens’ international high-potential communicators program and helped his team win the Siemens top+ Star Award for Total Business Improvement.
He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in government and international studies. At Notre Dame, he completed the Hesburgh Program in Public Service and competed for the Fighting Irish Track & Field team, earning a Notre Dame Monogram and Big East Academic All-Star recognition. During his time in college he interned in Washington, D.C., for both Senator Richard J. Durbin’s office and the Federal Communications Commission’s International Bureau. More recently, he achieved a certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace from the University of South Florida and earned his Enterprise Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt.
An avid music enthusiast, he has seen more than 400 concerts by 300 different bands (a tally that has only slowed because of children and a pandemic), written songs that you can find on iTunes or Spotify (if you’re really sleuthy), and contributed music reviews and stories to the Tribune Company newspapers. In fact, Jeff got his start creating online content in the mid-1990s when he designed a band’s website, writing copy and HTML code in SimpleText and then FTPing each webpage to a server. Beyond his career and interest in music, Jeff has also volunteered as a coach in youth soccer, travel baseball, and middle school and high school track and field. He resides in the Chicago suburbs with his wife and two teenaged children.
